Ever wonder why some women struggle with fertility despite "doing everything right"? Fertility massage therapist Erika Perez takes us on a fascinating journey through traditional Mayan womb care practices that address fertility, painful periods, and emotional wellbeing in ways Western medicine often overlooks.

The intersection of ancient wisdom and modern wellness has never been more relevant than in the practice of womb care. In a fascinating conversation with fertility massage therapist Erika Perez, she shares how traditional Mayan techniques are helping women reconnect with their bodies in profound ways. Erika's journey from marketing professional to fertility massage therapist illuminates the importance of holistic approaches to women's health issues that conventional medicine often overlooks.

From Marketing to Learning Womb Care in Mexico

Erika's path to becoming a fertility massage therapist began, like many transformative journeys, during the global pandemic. After leaving her marketing career to pursue yoga teacher training, she found herself working at a massage school where she received free education (a $10,000 value that changed her life). This fortuitous opportunity led her to Denver, where she established her practice focusing on fertility, prenatal, and postpartum care. Her personal fertility challenges with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) deepened her connection to this work, giving her authentic empathy for clients experiencing similar struggles.

The ancient practice of Sobada de Matriz, a traditional Mayan uterine massage technique, forms the cornerstone of Erika's work. During her training in Los Angeles, she experienced a profound physical transformation when her teacher adjusted her dropped and tilted uterus. The audible "pop" and subsequent feeling of being truly centered in her body for the first time was life-changing. This experience motivated her to master these techniques and bring them to women who might benefit from this little-known practice. Later, her journey took her to Mexico, where she learned directly from Rafita, a traditional midwife with 40 years of experience who had helped nearly 800 babies "come earthside."

One of the most fascinating aspects of womb care practices is the consistent emphasis on warmth across different healing traditions. Erika notes that approximately 95% of her clients have what traditional Mexican medicine calls "frialdad" or coldness in the womb—something that can be physically felt as a temperature difference. This concept appears not only in Mexican traditional medicine but also in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, suggesting a universal understanding of the importance of proper circulation and warmth in reproductive health. Treatment involves self-womb massage, proper uterine positioning, and consuming warming foods to improve blood flow and overall womb health.

The Masculine and The Feminine (We Need Both!)

The balance between masculine and feminine energy emerges as another crucial element in fertility wellness. According to Rafita and her daughter Mari, many American women struggle with conception because they're "too much in their masculine"—focused on data, numbers, and logical approaches rather than connecting with their bodies and hearts. While Erika values lab work and data, she emphasizes that fertility requires both analytical understanding and emotional readiness. As she puts it, "Your heart has to be ready to conceive, you have to be in a state of joy and abundance" to call in that energy.

When. It's. Time.

Perhaps most poignantly, Erica shares her personal revelation from her trip to Mexico. After Rafita examined her womb and declared it perfectly positioned and healthy, Erika wondered why she still hadn't conceived despite doing "all the right things." Rafita's simple yet profound answer—"If you're not pregnant yet, it's because it's not time"—brought Erika immense peace. This wisdom about divine timing reminds us that some things cannot be forced or optimized, no matter how meticulously we follow protocols or analyze data.

For women interested in connecting with these practices, Erika offers both in-person sessions in Denver and virtual consultations where she teaches self-womb massage, castor oil packs, and yoni steaming. Unlike many practitioners, she doesn't recommend generic supplements, instead encouraging women to get proper lab work to understand their unique needs—a complementary approach to functional medicine.
